Lessons in Confidence: What My Parents Taught Me

When I think about confidence, the most confident people I know are my mum and dad. Each of them showed me different ways to carry myself with strength, resilience, and self-assurance.

My mum has always been an incredible role model. She taught me to never give up, to keep breaking down walls, and to keep pushing forward no matter what. Her positivity is contagious—she is an optimistic, strong, and independent woman. I truly hope that those qualities are instilled in me because her unwavering determination is something I deeply admire.

My dad, on the other hand, had a different kind of confidence. He never cared what people thought of him. He would always say, “You take me as I am,” and he lived by that. He spoke his mind, wore what he wanted, and never let the opinions of others dictate his choices. I wish I had more of that in me. I find myself caring too much about what others think, and I know that kind of freedom—being unapologetically yourself—is something to strive for.

Confidence comes in different forms, and my parents each had their own unique way of showing it. From my mum, I learned perseverance and positivity. From my dad, I saw the power of self-acceptance. I hope to find a balance between the two, learning to be strong and optimistic while also letting go of the fear of judgment. Because in the end, true confidence is about embracing who you are and standing tall, no matter what the world thinks.
